Williams-Sonoma Home! Williams-Sonoma: Cooks' Network


Makes about 40

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup sparkling or granulated sugar

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream sugar, vegetable shortening and oil. Add egg and vanilla.
Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and cream of tartar.
Whisk into the creamed mixture until dough is well combined.
Cover dough and chill 3 hours or overnight. Mix dough.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Shape dough in 1 tablespoon balls; roll in sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheets spaced about 3 inches.
Bake 12 to 14 minutes. Cool 2 minutes, transfer to rack.
